From Trial to Triumph
PUBLICATION SUMMER 2014:
Lawrie is the author of a definitive review of the evolution of Canadian financial regulation and how that process led to the strong and stable financial system that characterizes the country today. “From Trial to Triumph: How Canada’s past financial crises helped shape a superior regulatory system”, is presented by the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary, where Lawrie is an Executive Fellow. From the earliest days of Canada as a country, relatively unique situations and developments have given rise to a financial regulatory model which, it turns out, is broadly applicable in many different financial environments. Accordingly the so-called Canadian model is now being adapted for use in many jurisdictions around the world. In addition to describing historical roots, the paper provides an extensive overview of the present regulatory framework, compares it to the U.S. and U.K. and sets out some thoughts for future development. The paper can be downloaded from the School’s website at http://policyschool.ucalgary.ca/?q=content/trial-triumph-how-canadas-past-financial-crises-helped-shape-superior-regulatory-system.
